Tetsuro Araki: The Real Mastermind Of Death Note | Know Your Artist

Tetsuro Araki is a Japanese animator, director and a storyboard artist. With no need for an introduction, he is simply considered as one of the greatest directors in Japanese anime history. Tetsuro Araki directed arguably one of the most successful and hottest anime in the history of the animation industry – Death Note. Death Note drew so many viewers to it that the people and section of audience who even loathed anime shows ridiculing them as the inferior stuff for children couldn’t stay away from this masterpiece for long.


Death Note is said to be the torchbearer for the anime shows in the western market which played a significant role in popularizing the art of Japanese anime in the western markets and audiences. Death Note, undoubtedly, became a global success right on its release. However, Tetsuro didn’t stop there. He had a lot of world-class animation left inside his mind that he wanted to launch on the screens and serve hotter than ever animation sequences to the audience of his genre of anime. Thenceforth, he created and directed yet another show with the greater intensity and darker plots for the audience who liked to watch more of the mature side of the anime. Tetsuro Araki brought Attack On Titan to his fans and garnered in numerous accolades and awards with immeasurable love and appreciation from the fans of anime all around the world and not just in Japan.


Personal Information –

Tetsuro Araki was born on November 05th, 1976 in Sayama, Saitama Prefecture, Japan.

Biography –

Tetsuro completed his graduation from Humanities department as he has candidly said in several of his interviews about him not being a very bright kid in his academics in his childhood. Just after his graduation, he interned with Madhouse Production as a production assistant and released his very first directorial venture in the form of original video animation Otogi-Jushi Akazukin in 2005. Araki also released an episode directed by him when he was n the second year of his internship.


In his years of working in Madhouse production, he joined his efforts and worked along with personalities like the animation director Takayuki Hirao, the director of God Eater and co-director of Attack On Titan. Tetsuro has also worked on several other projects by Takayuki Hirao as a key animator even after leaving the Madhouse production house.

Tetsuro got himself in the wedlock with his wife Aya Hida. Aya is also a member of the staff of the animation production company Gonzo. Thus it won’t be complete misfitting to assume that this couple crossed paths on one or the other animation ventures of themselves.


Araki won the best director award for the first season of his sensational anime series Attack On Titan in the year 2013 at the Newtype x Machi Asobi Anime Awards 2013. In the year 2014, Tetsuro Araki again won the award for the best director in the Anime Of The Year category at the Tokyo Anime award festival 2014.


With his long time friend and work partner Masaru Kitao who worked as the character designer for the anime series Death Note, Tetsuro also appeared at Anime Expo 2017.

Although, Tetsuro is credited highly with the immense successes of two of his directorial projects Death Note and Attack on Titan; Araki has directed a number of animated series and full feature-length animated movies either based on his own animated series or independent animated commercial movies. Even the non-anime watchers couldn’t contain their excitement and spoke highly of these two animated masterpieces.
